My Favorite Gay Couples in Media

It is Gaypril here at Rowan University, so it is the best time to talk about love. Gay love, obviously. Straight love has never connected with me, but gay love does, so any pride-related month reminds me of all my favorite gay couples. I think about them this month because they are a good example of happy, perfect, gay couples. We need more representation in the media, so writing this listicle also helps me contribute to that. With that, here is a list of five of my favorite gay couples in fiction. Also, there are spoilers for all of the properties I mention.

Will and Nico (Percy Jackson)

Nico Di Angelo, the son of Hades, probably deserves love the most out of any character in any story ever. There is no other perfect person to love him than Will Solace, son of Apollo, a literal sunshine boy. Their Darkness x Sunshine trope works so well, as they perfectly complement each other. They also have one of the strongest relationships in all of Percy Jackson, as they went to Tartarus and back and their relationship survived. They even have their own book! And their book is getting a sequel! They have so many cute moments throughout their story. One of my favorites includes when Nico kisses Will after he saved him, asking him to be his personal care bear. Will also calls him his little ball of darkness, which is simply adorable. They even kept gifts they gave to each other! Will gave Nico a skull ring and Nico gave Will a bronze coin with a replica of his sun tattoo on one side and Hades’ helm on the other. They are the top on my list because they are too adorable, and I love when couples are wholesome. Also Nico is my favorite character of all time, which is what makes this couple higher on the list.

Nick and Charlie (Heartstopper)

Nick and Charlie became everyone’s favorite couple in 2022 when the show came out. Nick is extremely charming and good looking, with Kit Connor portraying him, and Charlie is this anxious little mess. So, in theory, they are perfect for each other. They have a golden retriever x cat vibe going on, and that works well for them. They happen to be one of my favorite couples because of how cute and wholesome they are. My favorite moment of theirs is when Nick surprised Charlie and brought him to the beach, and he screamed “I like Charlie Spring! In a romantic way, not just a friend way!” In the same scene, Nick picks up Charlie and shouts “You’re my boyfriend! I’m your boyfriend! We’re Boyfriends!” That entire episode has my heart, but most especially that scene in particular. I love the entire show, and they make it especially amazing. The reason that they are not at the top of my list is because they have some problems. The biggest thing is they get a little bit spicy in season 3, which bothers me because they are still only minors. I miss when they were wholesome little teenagers. I understand people get more mature, but I liked when it was more relatable and just cute, Especially since I was their age when it came out. However, those are my only qualms, as overall they are an amazing couple.

Luz and Amity (The Owl House)

Lumity changed people’s perspective of what Disney was capable of in 2022. They were the first gay couple that was obviously included in a Disney Channel series. Technically the two police officers in Gravity Falls were gay, but it was very subtle and Lumity’s inclusion was very obvious. They even made sure to include the fact that Luz was bisexual and Amity was a lesbian. This show was a goldmine for representation for queer kids in 2022, with multiple gay characters and the inclusion of a non-binary character (who they actually used they/them pronouns for!). Lumity was the best of the representation, as they were wholesome and genuinely sweet. Even with all the trauma they go through, they get through it all and stay healthy. They support each other and they have such a nice relationship to watch. My favorite scene is when Luz calls Amity a “batata”, which is Spanish for “sweet potato”. The reason why they are below Nick and Charlie on the ranking is because they have a special place in my heart. I also do not connect to sapphic relationships as much as Achillean relationships since I am more masc identifying, but I am becoming more open to loving Sapphic relationships.

Jesper and Wylan (Six of Crows/ Shadow and Bone Netflix Series)

Wesper has had my heart ever since I read Six of Crows in 2024 and watched Shadow and Bone. They are the only gay couple in the Grishaverse, which says a lot because there is a lot of romance in the Grishaverse. They are equally adorable in the book and the show, but the book version has my heart a little more. One of my favorite moments is when Wylan and Jesper are talking and Wylan says “just girls” and Jesper says “no, not just girls”. My other favorite moment is when they first kissed in Crooked Kingdom and Jesper describes their kiss as a gunshot. My favorite moment from the show is the deleted scene where Jesper makes a key for Wylan to use in order for them to live together. This coupling made me want to read Six of Crows and watch Shadow and Bone, as I also love both characters. They are lower on the list because I don’t like how they were portrayed in Shadow and Bone, they were just too spicy for me, as I feel like they were more wholesome and cute in the books. I get that it’s probably because they were adults in the show, but I still like wholesomeness better than spiciness. And I get that some people like the spicy, but this is my list.

Caitlyn and Vi (Arcane)

CaitVi made lesbian Arcane fans cheer all over the world when their kiss episode debuted. I like this couple because I love the characters and it is one of the reasons why I started and continued to watch Arcane. I like how close the two characters get, but I don’t like how it gets in the way of Vi’s relationship with her sister. As you can see, this is very low on the list because there are many reasons why I do not like it as much as the others. The main reason is that they are quite toxic. The worst moment for them is when Caitlyn says “you are no different” right before jabbing Vi in the chest with her gun, and leaving her on the ground. Vi is left crying, which is absolutely heartbreaking as a Vi lover, but it’s also heartbreaking knowing this is one of the very few times that Vi actually cries. Vi is very strong, but Caitlyn is the one that makes her cry. They also move way too fast. They kiss once, and the next time they have any romance between them they immediately get intimate? That is way too fast, as most hookups are that fast. They should have been more romantic before getting intimate, because then the pacing with their relationship would not have been off. However, there is a lot about their relationship that I do like. I like how Vi calls Caitlyn cupcake, because it is both funny and cute. My favorite moments from them is when Vi helped Caitlyn blend in at the brothel, and I also like when they work together to take down Ambessa in season 2. CaitVi has a spot in my heart, and their toxicity will never muddle that.
